2026 UPDATED GUIDE
Why is My Internet Slow? Find Wi-Fi Thieves & Boost Speed (100% Fix)
You pay the bills, but does Netflix buffer? Is your ping high in games? The problem might not be your ISP, but wrong router settings or "digital parasites" stealing your bandwidth.
There are three main culprits for slow internet speed: Signal Interference, Wrong Channel Selection, or Network Thieves. Most users try to solve it by "restarting the modem," but this is temporary. As Orion Tech Sys network engineers, we have compiled the technical methods to save your internet from bottlenecks.
⚡ DO NOT START WITHOUT A SPEED TEST:
Measure your current speed on Speedtest.net before intervening. If you are using VDSL, below 24 Mbps, and for Fiber, below 50 Mbps is considered "Critical Slowness".
1. Catching Wi-Fi Thieves (Router Interface Analysis)
Your neighbor or a malicious person might have cracked your password. Here is how to catch thieves by entering the brain of your modem without installing any program:
1
Login to Interface
Type 192.168.1.1 (or 0.1 / 1.2) into your browser. The username/password is written on the sticker under your modem (Usually admin/admin).
2
DHCP List
Find the "Local Network", "Wireless Status", or "Connected Devices" tab in the menus. Here you will see everyone currently connected to the modem.
3
MAC Filtering
If you see an "Unknown-Android" or an unfamiliar PC in the list, copy its MAC address and paste it into the "MAC Filtering > Block" section. Now they can't enter even if they know the password!
📱 MOBILE DEVICE SECURITY WARNING
Sometimes it's not the neighbor slowing down the internet, but spyware on your phone consuming data in the background. Have you checked if your phone is clean?

2. What is Channel Interference?
If you live in an apartment, your neighbors' modem signals "fight" with yours. This causes speed drops. Changing the Channel Width from the modem interface is like moving traffic to an empty lane.
- Channels 1, 6, and 11: These are the golden channels in the 2.4 GHz band that do not overlap. Try one of these instead of "Auto".
- Bandwidth (20/40 MHz): If there are many modems around, choose 20 MHz (Signal quality increases). If you are in a detached house, choose 40 MHz (Speed increases).
3. Lowering "Ping" with DNS Change
Your ISP's default DNS servers sometimes respond slowly. For faster surfing, you can enter the following DNS addresses into your modem or PC:
| Provider |
Primary DNS |
Secondary DNS |
Feature |
| Cloudflare |
1.1.1.1 |
1.0.0.1 |
World's Fastest (Privacy Focused) |

🏢 BUSINESS OWNERS ATTENTION!
Modem settings are enough for home, but if you have customer data and accounting records in your office, a standard modem cannot protect you. You must use a Hardware Firewall.

4. Router Placement Mistakes
Even with the best settings, if your modem is in the wrong place, you won't get speed.
- Height: Never put the modem on the floor. It should be at least at table height.
- Obstacles: Do not hide the modem behind the TV, inside a cabinet, or next to an aquarium. Signals cannot pass through water and metal.
